Calblanque Nature Reserve
This Nature Reserve represents one of the last untouched areas along the Mediterranean coastline, a combination of wonderful sandy beaches backed by rugged cliffs, sandbanks, hills, and salt flats which are of great ecological value.
To reach Calblanque, take the motorway from Cartagena towards La Manga, once past Los Belones, take the next singposted exit. This will take you down a very dusty dirt road, to the centre of the park (the only way in by car) you will reach a parking area, an information booth (open in summer only) a camping area and a list of recommended routes.
From here on the choice is yours, you can head straight for the beaches, take a gentle stroll, or if you're feeling more adventurous, try the route into Cala Reona, but be warned that path climbs quite steeply up into the hills and takes you around the front of the mountain, not terribly high but very close to the edge and some fairly spectacular drops onto the rocks below. The path looks more difficult than it is, but would recommend caution (and sensible walking shoes).
In the other direction the route takes you to the sandy beaches of Playa de Calblanque and Playa Larga and from here you can head inland towards Los Belones, or continue on the rough coastal path which takes you to Playa Negrete, a beautiful wide sandy beach with rocks and caves (this is a nudist beach).
There are no amenities in Calblanque so remember to take a drink with you. You are asked to follow the established tracks to avoid disturbing the delicate environment. The reserve is very popular and does get incredibly busy in summer, particularly at the weekends, so if you want to enjoy the tranquility of this unspoilt area at it's best, give it a try out of the main season.
